Procurator Fiscal

A legally qualified civil servant who receives reports about crimes from the police and others and then decides what action to take in the public interest, including whether to prosecute someone. Following a review of the evidence in rape and other serious sexual offences the PF reports with recommendations to senior prosecutors (Crown Counsel), who make the final decision about charging and prosecution. COPFS are responsible for providing information to the complainer, which is the term given to the alleged victim named in a charge about whether or not the case will proceed.
