In 2019/20, there were a total of 13,364 sexual crimes reported to the police in Scotland. Of these, 2,213 were reports of rape, 130 were attempted rape and 4,936 were reports of sexual assault (Recorded Crime in Scotland 2019-20).
While figures for many crimes in Scotland are going down, for sexual offences they continue to rise. Sexual crimes have been on a long-term upward trend since the mid-1970s. In 2018/19, reports of sexual crimes were at their highest level since 1971, the first year for which comparable crime groups are available (Recorded Crime in Scotland 2018-19), although overall numbers of reports of sexual crimes fell very slightly, by 1% in 2019-20 (Recorded Crime in Scotland 2019-20).
